The move towards biomass fuel is gathering momentum. This can be seen in many ways, not least in the forecast that 200,000 new jobs at different levels of engineering will be created in the next 5 years (source – Tomorrow’s Global Talent - Government Report)
The report makes it clear that British industry will have to move with the times, and plan now for this demand. The coalition government has pledged to support the green initiatives from the previous regime, and this will need an increased supply of graduates and qualified engineers to satisfy the trend.
Green skills are essentially based on traditional science skills – maths, engineering, science and technology. So students considering which subjects to choose with a bright future are being given some strong pointers.
David Clarke, Chief executive of the Energy Technologies Institute says "In the 1990's and early 2000's we were seeing a steady reduction in engineers coming out of the UK system. We're now starting to see that trend reverse, but the rate we are trying to engineer these new systems at will require more".
"Kids going through the school system now show a greater level of environmental awareness than we have seen before. We have to get people to see the excitement and challenge in what we are doing".
