The UK Government is committed to combating climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% of 1990 levels by 2050. In 2008, the Government signed up to European targets to produce 15% of all energy produced in the UK from renewable sources and the recent Renewable Energy Strategy proposed that 30% of that renewable energy would come from bioenergy. Woodfuel is a sustainable and low carbon source of bioenergy that can make a substantial contribution to achieving these targets.
The purpose of the Bio-energy Capital Grants Scheme is to promote the efficient use of biomass for energy. This scheme is currently closed, but a new round has been announced and is expected to open late November or early December 2009.
The last round was slightly different from previous rounds in that funds were allocated on a rolling basis until the scheme funds had been allocated. The purpose is to promote the efficient use of biomass for energy, by stimulating the early deployment of biomass fuelled heat and biomass combined heat and power projects. The Biomass Energy Centre is the UK national enquiry point for questions relating to biomass fuels and technologies. It is managed by Forest Research, the research agency of the Forestry Commission, as part of the Government's response to recommendations made by the Biomass Task Force. www.biomassenergycentre.org.uk

In October 2004 the Government asked the Biomass Task Force to suggest measures to optimise the contribution of biomass energy to renewables, sustainable farming, forestry and the rural economy. Their report can be downloaded from the DEFRA website at www.defra.gov.uk
GBI (formerly known as Selective Finance for Investment in England or SFIE grants) makes discretionary grants available from Government (the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills - BIS) to support businesses with investment projects which will increase productivity, skills and employment in deprived areas in England. The Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) 2007-2013 has been approved by the EU on 6th December 2007. It has a budget of £3.9 billion to support a range of projects and initiatives based on Regional Implementation Plans drawn up by the RDAs. See Rural Development Programme for England
